This kind of reaction is not uncommon, for Skyler in particular and for women – often wives – on top-drawer TV dramas in general. Characters like Skyler become targets of vituperation unimaginable to their male counterparts, most of whom engage in vastly more destructive and immoral behavior every episode. By failing to indulge every whim of the the male antiheroes around whom their shows are built, the women become obstacles to those men getting exactly what they want when they want it at all times, which is the core fantasy of antihero fiction. Cold cunning, ruthlessness, rage, self-interest, a propensity for physical violence – we gender these unheroic characteristics as male, and celebrate them; passivity, bitterness, grief, emotional enmeshment, a knack for attacking and deflating egos – we gender these unheroic characteristics as female, and loathe them. Skyler White, Betty Francis, Megan Draper, Catelyn Stark, Sansa Stark, Cersei Lannister, Carmela Soprano: On the sole count of “being women,” Fan Court finds you guilty as charged.

‘Breaking Bad’ Recap: The Sky Is Falling

Been seeing some .. pretty COLORFUL critiques of characters from popular shows lately!  You don’t like them?  They deserve what because you don’t like them?  Ok.

I love Skyler (and Marie). Also, Carmela is great. I think that both of these shows treat all their characters fairly and don’t judge any of them for being women. Bums me out that “Fan Court” can’t see how well-written and interesting they are. Only that they aren’t Walter White or Tony Soprano. Obviously Walter wins the award for Worst Human, but Tony is pretty bad too, you know, what with his proclivity for murder.

It freaks me out that people are so hateful towards characters like Skyler but are willing to forgive Walt for all the terrible things he’s done.

Sure, every now and then a girl needs some saving, but let’s get real here – at least half the time, it’s the other way around. A big part of Once Upon A Time‘s appeal lies in its compilation of female characters that kick butt. - x

I’m surprised at how much I like this show. Also there are tons of awesome ladies, but my favorite character is still Mr. Gold.

Sometimes I have the time and patience to get from an idea to a fully fleshed-out, penciled, inked and coloured comic.

Sometimes I don’t.

A very succinct way to present the main issue with sexism and the double-standard.  Remember, “empathy” isn’t about feeling sorry for someone, it’s about earnestly placing yourself in someone’s shoes and considering what life is like for them.  It’s having the courage and presence of mind to think outside your own personal experiences; it’s about broadening your worldview.

for you, drue
