Oops! Katy has been talking about Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs but I couldn’t remember what they were called. When I googled “Norwegian hex symbols” things kind of like this came up, so I guessed (incorrectly) that that was their name.

The Summer of Battling Boy Give-Away!

BATTLING BOY POSTERS!

First Second has trusted me to run a series of give-aways and one contest between May and Battling Boy’s release in October. This means you will have a few chances to win posters, prints, galleys (advance reader’s copies of the book) among other things.

For May, I’m giving away a few Battling Boy posters!

Rules and Guidelines:

1. Like or reblog this post and encourage your followers to do the same. The more your name is in the notes to this post the higher your chances of winning.

2. Make sure you follow Destroy Comics. This is not necessary to winning, but if I decide to check if the winner is following the blog, it will influence my decision.

3. You have two weeks.

Winners will be selected randomly and contacted on May 20th.

Good luck!

If grandmothers around the world had a rallying cry, it would probably sound something like “You need to eat!”

Photographer Gabriele Galimberti’s grandmother said something similar to him before one of his many globetrotting work trips. To ensure he had at least one good meal, she prepared for him a dish of ravioli before he departed on one of his adventures.

“In that occasion I said to my grandma ‘You know, Grandma, there are many other grandmas around the world and most of them are really good cooks,” Galimberti wrote via email. “I’m going to meet them and ask them to cook for me so I can show you that you don’t have to be worried for me and the food that I will eat!’ This is the way my project was born!”

The project, “Delicatessen With Love”, took Galimberti to 58 countries where he photographed grandmothers with both the ingredients and finished signature dishes.

He acted as photographer and stylist during each shoot with the grandmothers, taking a portrait of both the women and the food they made for him.

From top to bottom:

Inara Runtule, 68, Kekava, Latvia. Silke €(herring with potatoes and cottage cheese).

Grace Estibero, 82, Mumbai, India. Chicken vindaloo.

Susann Soresen, 81, Homer, Alaska. Moose steak.

Serette Charles, 63, Saint-Jean du Sud, Haiti. Lambi in creole sauce.

The photographer’s grandmother Marisa Batini, 80, Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy. Swiss chard and ricotta Ravioli with meat sauce.

Normita Sambu Arap, 65, Oltepessi (Masaai Mara), Kenya. Mboga and orgali (white corn polenta with vegetables and goat).

Julia Enaigua, 71, La Paz, Bolivia. Queso Humacha (vegetables and fresh cheese soup).

Fifi Makhmer, 62, Cairo, Egypt. Kuoshry (pasta, rice and legumes pie).

Isolina Perez De Vargas, 83, Mendoza, Argentina. Asado criollo (mixed meats barbecue).

Bisrat Melake, 60, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Enjera with curry and vegetables.

48. “I got it for free” is a pet hate. You got it “free” not “for free”. You don’t get something cheap and say you got it “for cheap” do you? Mark Jones, Plymouth

Er… yes… yes, actually, I do

Oh god, this article made me laugh so hard.

TL;DR: “American English is plebeian and dirty and Americans are not allowed to coin their own idioms!”

Ah, elitist prescriptivism. Fun stuff.

Yeah a good portion of these are fine. I mean, people really get made about 24/7? & “Touch base”? I understand #3. That’s about it :\

To quote a commenter on the link page:

“Hwæt! Wé Gárdena in géardagum
þéodcyninga þrym gefrúnon
hú ðá æþelingas ellen fremedon.

I trust everyone who has complained about Americanisms creeping in to the English language will have no trouble understanding the above. That’s what English looked like around 1,300 years ago.”

And it’s not even as if you even could make the argument that British English is the traditional, correct form, considering that oftentimes American English uses an older form and its British English that’s changed a pronunciation or the like more recently. That doesn’t make American English the better variant either— and of course that’s completely setting aside the fact that both American English and British English are really only language varieties out of convenience (i.e. there isn’t one language variety spoken in the US but a whole bunch of different ones that make up what we consider American English).

Both the reader complaints and the original article make me so angry!

“Britain is a very distinct country from the US. Not better, not worse, different. And long live that difference. That means maintaining the integrity of our own gloriously nuanced, subtle and supple version - the original version - of the English language.”

AHHHHHHH

Question for the Tumblr Adept

How can I make photo posts not so outrageously large? This was a very rewarding read...

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

This was a very rewarding read after enduring the gothic agonies of The Mysteries of Udolpho. Austen is playful, and even though she parodies and lightly mocks gothic literature, her respect for novels of any form makes Northanger Abbey a wry, but loving riff off of a genre that I certainly plan to avoid in the future.

One of the best things about this book was that although Austen’s heroine, Catherine, iss naive about the motivations and behaviors of those around her, her blindness is easy to sympathize with. Austen presents her fouler characters in a way that temporarily obscures poorer aspects, so that the reader is surprised by some characters’ failings just as much as Catherine is. Although, to be be fair to the reader, Catherine is still a little late on the uptake. I forgive Catherine all her naiveté for managing to be both entirely wholesome and actually appealing. Austen takes the formula behind Emily St. Aubert and rewrites her into something much closer to a real human. And without nearly as many tears.
